WooCommerce Tax Configuration Guide
Tax configuration in WooCommerce is flexible but requires careful setup to comply with your local regulations. Getting it right from the start prevents costly corrections later.
Step 1: Enable Tax Calculations
Go to WooCommerce → Settings → General and check "Enable tax rates and calculations." This reveals the full Tax settings tab.
Step 2: Choose Tax Display Options
- Prices entered with tax: Simplest for consumer stores. Displayed prices include tax.
- Prices entered without tax: Better for B2B stores or markets where tax-exclusive pricing is standard.
Step 3: Set Up Tax Classes
WooCommerce has three default tax classes: Standard, Reduced Rate, and Zero Rate. Many countries tax different product categories at different rates (e.g., food at 0%, clothing at 20% in the UK). Assign the correct tax class to each product.
Step 4: Add Tax Rates
Under WooCommerce → Settings → Tax → Standard Rates, add rates for each country and state/region you sell to. You can import rates via CSV for complex multi-jurisdiction setups.
Automated Tax Calculation
For US stores with nexus in multiple states, manual rate management is error-prone. Use automated tax services:
- WooCommerce Tax (free): Powered by Jetpack — automatic US and EU rates
- TaxJar: Comprehensive US and international — handles economic nexus rules
- Avalara AvaTax: Enterprise-grade compliance for large stores
VAT for EU Stores
Post-Brexit EU rules require charging VAT at the buyer's local rate for digital goods and services. The EU VAT Assistant plugin handles this automatically.
